MALLARME Stéphane.
LES DIEUX ANTIQUES. New illustrated mythology after George W. Cox and the works of modern science for the use of high schools, boarding schools, schools and people of the world. Paris, J. Rothschild, 1880.
In-8 (218 x 147 mm) of XVI-320 pp.; midnight blue half-marquin with wedges, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt net boxes, covers and spine preserved, untrimmed, gilt head (A. and R. Maylander).
Original edition. Bound on the head: a superb autograph letter signed by Stéphane Mallarmé addressed to Leconte de Lisle (Saturday May 17, 1879, 4 pages in-8).
In addition to its reference to the publication of the Ancient Gods - Mallarmé thanks Leconte de Lisle for allowing him to insert some of his ancient verses in this work - it contains a poignant personal note evoking the illness of Mallarmé's youngest son, little Anatole, who was to die a few months later, on October 8, 1879, at the age of eight. His disappearance profoundly changed the poetics of Mallarmé, a catastrophe to which the posthumous fragments published under the title Tombeau d'Anatole bear witness.
