Couppier dedicated (printed dedication) this work to Niepce de Saint-Victor. The French photographer made stereoscopic glass images of important places in France, Algeria, Belgium, Italy... He followed the French army to northern Italy in 1859 to photograph the Franco-Austrian war where he took the first known photograph of soldiers killed in battle. He was a founding member of the Société Française de Photographie, the first in the world.
