II: VIII + 730 p. 13 plates (7 folded and one in color), drawn by the author's wife and made by J. Clark, T.M. Baynes and W. Gauci, vignettes. Missing two folded maps. First edition of a classic work about Mexico, written shortly after the war of independence against Spain. It has been considered the first -and one of the best- travel books to the new state. Includes chapters on geography, society, economy (with special attention to them), politics and recent history of Mexico, in addition to the travel book itself. The author, the diplomat H. G. Ward, is recorded on the cover as 'His Majesty chargé d'affaires in that country during the years 1825, 1826 and part of 1827'. Exlibris of previous holder. Two volumes of gum in half skin and points, curdled loin, double shingles, nerves, marbled cuts.
