Prosper d'ÉPINAY (1836-1914) Salomé Bronze with a shaded brown patina. Monogrammed P.D. H. 43.5 cm A student of Dantan Jeune in Paris and d'Amici in Rome, this aristocratic and worldly artist from Mauritius had an interesting career in Paris, Rome and London. He frequented the salons of the high bourgeoisie and legitimist circles and executed numerous portraits of the highest dignitaries of the European courts, to the point that he was nicknamed "the sculptor of sovereigns". Residing at the Villa Medici in Rome, he discovered ancient sculpture and was also inspired by allegorical, mythological and biblical subjects. In 1864, he settled in Rome and founded a workshop that he ran until 1912.
