Biography: Born in the Jura, André Tondu moves very early in DIjon where his parents open a fish outlet. In 1916, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Dijon. He established himself as one of the best students and won all the school's prizes. He was awarded his wing by Mr. Barabant who helped him finance his departure for Paris in 1920. He won the second prize in the Chenavard competition and the second medal in the Collin competition. In 1926, he was awarded a government scholarship and went to the Congo where he learned new skills. In 1931, he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in painting, the first Burgundian to obtain it since Prudhon.
