Queen Nazli Sabri, second wife of King Fouad I and mother of King Farouk, was Queen of Egypt from 1919 to 1936. Great-granddaughter of Soliman Pasha, she comes from an important Egyptian family with partly French roots. A great amateur and collector of jewellery, she constantly poses new challenges to the jewellers of Place Vendôme. Opened on 16 September, the "Precious Stones" exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris presents a superb 673-diamond Van Cleef & Arpels necklace commissioned by Nazli Sabri for the wedding of her daughter Faouzia to the Crown Prince of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Deposited by her son, banned from returning to Egypt and exiled to the United States, Queen Nazli saw her fortune melt away and in 1975, at the age of more than 80, she sold some of her jewellery at auction, including this famous necklace for $140,000 (currently 640,000 euros). The former queen died three years later in a small apartment lent by friends. After 40 years, in December 2015, the jewel reappeared at auction in New York, where it was bought by Van Cleef & Arpels for its heritage collection, so the fallen queen's necklace is now back in Paris.
