Twin mask nda Baoulé
Ivory Coast
Wood
H.: 28.5 cm.
Double mask with frill composed of two almost identical faces: eyes in half-moon relief framed by a continuous eyebrow arch, long straight nose with a marked ridge and small tight mouth. The ngole keloids mark the forehead, the cheeks and the corners of the lips. They differ from face to face as do hairstyles, with one higher forming three shells than the other single-shelled.
Nud masks ("twins") often have one black face (male face) and one red face (female face), which is not the case here. They are part of the set of gba gba masks and may relate to the representation of the sun and the moon, the married couple and the twin. They are worn by a dancer during women's funerals and during the harvest season.
Replacement object, when the original has been sold, harvested, stolen or destroyed, often made by the same sculptor as the original, this object has been used.
