Caryatid stool Lupona Luba
DRC
Wood
H.: 38 cm.
Small wood lacks at the base
Stool carved in heavy wood with a caryatid female figure full of curves, which supports at arm's length the round seat. This feminine figure is sitting on the circular support of the stool with her legs bent. She is wearing a very elaborate hairstyle. The abdomen is decorated with scarifications in relief. The seat and support have a patina of use and important marks of desiccation.
Stools called Lupona reserved for Luba dignitaries. They were often not used as such and simply served to establish the authority of the chief.
Object made specifically for colonial trade with obvious decorative interest.
