Spiritual spouse blolo bian Baoulé
Ivory Coast
Wood, beads
H.: 23 cm.
Male statuette firmly encamped on his legs. The hands frame the bulbous abdomen, covered with ngole keloids. The face has classic features: arched eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, straight nose, mouth carried forward, extended by a goatee, called akenza tenden. The hairstyle is gathered together in the form of a diadem and falls in a braided tail on the nape of the neck.
Mystical spouses are statuettes receptacles of the spirit of a deceased spouse, which
manifests itself through jealousy by causing impotence or sterility in the living partner, who to ward off this mistreatment has him/her sculpt an idealized effigy.
Replacement object, when the original has been sold, harvested, stolen or destroyed, often made by the same sculptor as the original, this object has been used.
