Oba in war dress Edo Bini
Kingdom of Benin (Nigeria)
Brass
H.: 58.5 cm
Anthropomorphic statue representing a male figure in war dress in a hieratic pose presenting his harness: in one hand a ceremonial sword of oblong shape
and in the other a spear. He is dressed in a long tunic adorned with necklaces and a bib in relief.
A large openwork crown cap. The statue rests on a base with openwork petal motifs. The numerous details adorning the sculpture mark the power of the Oba (royal figure). These statues were reserved for the exclusive use of the inhabitants of the royal palace, most often placed on altars consecrated by each new Oba.
Object made specifically for colonial trade with an obvious decorative interest.
