Water pipe element transformed into a Luba musical instrument
DRC
Wood, pigments, beads, fabric
H.: 49 cm.
The spherical bowl of this water pipe is surmounted by a female figure, her arms at the level of the conical breasts. The face presents half-closed eyelids inscribed in deep orbital cavities. The abdomen is decorated with scarifications in relief. Hairdo with four braids arranged in the back of the skull.
The function of water pipes is to attenuate the harshness of tobacco. The smoke was sucked from the
stove through the fresh water of the bulb.
Object made specifically for colonial trade with obvious decorative interest.
