Selected Fables [by J.-P. Claris] by Florian illustrated by Japanese artists (Kadji-ta Han-ko / Ka-no Tomo-nobou / Kou-bo-ta To Soui) under the direction of P. Barboutau, Tokio. Paris, Librairie Marpon & Flammarion, E. Flammarion successeur, sd (1895). Two volumes (Series 1 and 2) folded and shaped in the Japanese style and brought together in a 16 x 21 cm volume, bound in the publisher's burgundy full morocco binding under slipcover. First cover with an illustration in the Japanese style stamped on skin and inlaid. Personalised spine. Printed by the Shueisha company (Tokio). Each volume includes: a full-colour illustrated cover + 14 full-colour double-page prints + many black in-text drawings. The 1st series contains the following 14 fables : The Blind Man and the Paralytic - The Coquette and the Bee - The Cat and the Mirror - The Carp and the Carpillons - The Cricket - The Phoenix - The Monkey Showing the Magic Lantern - The Mole and the Rabbits - The Nightingale and the Prince - The Milan and the Pigeon - The Wild Boar and the Nightingales - The Dervis, the Crow and the Falcon - The Two Cats - The Young Man and the Old Man. The 2nd series contains the following 14 fables: The two peasants and the cloud - The peacock, the two goslings and the loon - The charlatan - The rabbit and the teal - The rabbit, the monkey and the walnut - The peasant and the river - The children and the partridges - The child and the mirror - The owl and the pigeon - The two travellers - The philosopher and the bull-cat - The old tree and the gardener - The two bald men - The miser and his son. Nice copy (slightly rubbed). Very rare in this luxurious presentation.
