Born in Paris in 1910, Pierre Joubert's life was entirely dedicated to drawing and scouting, and he remains to this day the artist who contributed most widely to the literary diffusion of the Scout art of living. An essential artist for all fans of Signe de piste, Joubert illustrated half of the covers of these youth novels from 1937 to the 1970s. Through his work for the "Signe de piste" collection of novels, Joubert illustrates the great names of scout literature: Guy de Larigaudie, Jean-Louis Foncine, Serge Dalens (Le Prince Éric), Jean Valbert, Henri Suquet (for the Fleurus publishing house) and many others.
This work depicts a scouting hike through a country landscape at dusk in autumn, with two stationary scouts in the foreground, studying the best route to take. The expression of the young boys reflects the values of Scouting: team spirit, leadership, courage and a sense of adventure. The breadth of the composition, the meticulous attention to detail and the dramatic richness of the contrasts of the sky in the background make this a work of prime importance for the artist.
