2 plates lithographed by Jules Méa, representing the Hanwell asylum (of which Ellis was the chief doctor) and the plan of a hospital for the insane projected by Esquirol. FIRST FRENCH EDITION  translated from English by Théophile Archambault, and enriched with notes by Esquirol.  Ellis (1780-1839) published this work in 1838, in London. Archambault (1806-1863), director in Charenton, wrote the long historical and statistical introduction and attached documents relating to the regime of a few alienated houses in France and England, including the law of 1838. Esquirol, who had this same law passed, obliging each department to set up a specialised hospital, annotated the work.
