"I won't say anything about Mr. Auburtin 's decorations: we know them, they covered the young painter's name with glory. But he is in him a great artist too little known, a poet of nature. I have noticed, in Mr Auburtin's seascapes and landscapes, an astonishing balance between qualities which, for most people, seem to be mutually exclusive. His drawing is of a firmness and 'solidity' admirables : he makes 'the portrait', so to speak anatomical, of a rock, a tree, a piece of land; but he is not the naive slave of the outline. The light rushes, abundant and generous on all the objects he peint : sometimes it seems to destroy the 'form'; but with a little attention, under the veil of the luminous colouring, one finds the pure and chastened line."
Jean Huré, "Causerie sur l'art pictural, M. Francis Auburtin", in Angers-Artiste, 1903, p. 118.
