Theo Meier (1908-1982), A view of Gunung Agung, Bali, signed and dated 'TheoMeier 70' (lower right), oil on canvas, 68x76 cm, Provenance:
-Given as present by Theo Meier to the father of the present owner, Prof. Dr. Alfred Bühler. Theo Meier (Basel 1908 - Bern 1982) was a Swiss painter, mainly active in Bali and Thailand. Meier's paintings capture the viewer with their rich and vivid colours, their tropical landscapes and flora and their beautiful exotic women. His works show the influences of his great idol Paul Gauguin as well as that of the German Expressionists and reflect his interest in primitive strength, the archaic and the simplicity of expression.
The studio of Theo Meier was situated only ten kilometres from Gunung Agung. Dwelling place of the Gods, it is Bali's highest and holiest mountain. Theo was certainly the only artist to paint this famous volcano so many times. Under different angles, weathers, and colours.
