The fight of Lean and Fat in a painted circle
Oak panel, one plank, not parquet flooring.
Old restorations.
11 x 14 cm
The subject belongs to medieval folklore: the fight of the lean and the fat is associated in Flanders with the
Lenten period and the Carnival celebrations. Its very tight framing on the faces is inspired by the panel by Pieter Brueghel the old man depicting a plump priest bitten by two old women (Copenhagen, Statens Museum for kunst), without retaining the anticlerical charge, changing the gender of the aggressors and adopting a circular format for the scene. Several versions with variants are known.
