Our panel is a study for one of the four monumental paintings in the grand décor of the General Assembly Hall of the Council of State in Paris "Les Moissons". Rarely in Henri Martin's production, the attitude of the young woman changes during their elaboration. Contrary to his usual practice, the artist, who had a precise conception of the final composition and its characters in mind from his early studies, changed the young woman's attitude twice. In a second study, she wears her hat on her head before holding it in front of her in the final composition, no doubt to suggest a conversation with the binder on her knees. At that time the harvests were not very noisy and people were happy to talk: in the middle of the large set we see, discreetly, the reaper with spinning blades, pulled by horses.
