The preparatory studies for L'Église (including an oil on panel belonging to the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse) were carried out by the painter during a stay in Harfleur in July 1914, a few days before the declaration of war. The following winter, Le Sidaner painted the canvas in his Versailles apartment, and delivered it in February 1915 to his dealer Georges Petit, who paid him 1,000 francs for it.
