If the Revolution abolished feudal rights, it was only with the fall of the royalty in 1792 that this abolition was truly done without any compensation for the last servitudes. The land had thus become free and farmers could cultivate it as they wished. Nevertheless, the fragmentation of the plots of land, the bad harvests but above all the differences in income between rich farmers and small farmers aroused real discontent. The supply of and trade in grain, an economically crucial activity, then provoked heated debates between conservatives and the most advanced revolutionaries who demanded the sharing of land.
The issues of manufacturing, industry, customs and transport are also raised in a number of texts presented here.
The 259 booklets in this collection give a fairly exhaustive idea of these controversies.
