Well known for his friendship and correspondence with Proust, Reynaldo Hahn was not only a regular visitor to the elegant salons of the Belle Époque - those of Princess Mathilde and Madeleine Lemaire in the first place - but also one of the fashionable composers of the turn of the century. A member of the Academy of Fine Arts and director of the Paris Opera, Reynaldo Hahn maintained close relations with the artistic milieu of his time, particularly with the author of our portrait, Rafael de Ochoa y Madrazo, a relative of his brother-in-law Raimundo de Madrazo (widowed at the first wedding of Eugénie de Ochoa).
