OUDRY Jean - Baptiste (Attributed to)
Paris 1686 - Beauvais 1755
Mid-body portrait of a quality man wearing a long powdered wig,
in a richly embroidered brown jacket, wrapped in a red drape, against a park background.
Oil on canvas (lacks top left; small lacks bottom right)
H. 90,5 - L. 73,5 cm
Beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame with a motif of foliage scrolls.
To be compared with the youthful portraits of Jean - Baptiste Oudry (1712 - 1719), when he was a pupil of Nicolas de Largillière, known either by the painted works themselves, or by his drawings preserved for the most part in his Livre de Raison (Musée du Louvre).
The historian Hal Oppermann has estimated the number of portraits made by J. B. Oudry to be around one hundred, most of which have not been found. For its three-quarter pose, the rhythm of the drapery with its marked shadows and the position of the hand, our painting can be compared with the drawing preserving the memory of the portrait of Monsieur Le Jat (1713) (Cf. Catalogue de l'exposition J. - B. Oudry, n° 8, pp. 54 - 55. Paris, Grand Palais 1982 - 1983).
