ERNST LUDWIG KIRCHNER_x001E_ Aschaffenburg 1880 - 1938 Frauenkirch/Davos Fir trees and alpine hut (Stafelalp). Drawing in rice coal with partial accentuation in coloured pencil 1919. The work is listed in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive in Witrach/Bern. - With the Basel estate stamp (Lugt 1570 b) on verso with the handwritten number "FS Da/Aa 14" and a sketch of a reed pen (Königstein). On lightly satined buff vélin. 37.5 x 33 cm. The present drawing dates from the time when Kirchner was in Davos for convalescence. His entire oeuvre, both painterly and graphic, was influenced by his encounter with the Swiss mountains. From his first months in Switzerland, which he spent on Stafelalp in the canton of Graubünden in 1917, and then, from autumn 1918, in the house "In den Lärchen" near Davos, Kirchner was extraordinarily productive. The seclusion in the mountains brought Kirchner mental peace and inspired his creative energy. He was aware of the positive effects of his new surroundings: "Today, the good van de Velde wrote to me that I should rather return to modern life. That is out of the question for me... Here I have a rich field for my creative activity that I could hardly manage in a healthy way, let alone today. The world in its charms is the same everywhere, only the outer forms are different. And here you learn to see deeper and penetrate further than in the so-called 'modern' life, which is usually so much more superficial despite its rich outer form.
