Grosz, George Mayan time. 1924. ink pen drawing on paper fully drawn on cardboard. 56.2 x 45.5 cm. Signed in graphite at lower right. - Mounted at points on underlay and under passepartout. Framed under glass. Little and evenly browned. Isolated with tiny foxspots. Overall well preserved. The work will be included in the emerging Catalogue Raisonné of George Grosz's paper works. - Provenance: Studio of the artist, Berlin (1924). Estate of George Grosz (1959). Drawings and coloured sheets. Cat. No. 29, illustrated there. - Probably preliminary study for the "Spiesser-Spiegel", published by Carl Reissner Verlag, Dresden 1925, in which the gifted satirist caricatured the bourgeois of his time in an accusing and refreshingly malicious manner. In the foreword to the Spiesser-Speigel he wrote: "In any case, I believe that even today there is still a lot of rubbish to cart away - and I am happy to take part in this work.
