Abstract Expressionism
Painter, graphic artist and art critic. Member of the New York School. From 1938 she became a student of Willem de Kooning at the American Artists School. The two began a relationship. Through Willem De Kooning, Elaine came into contact with Action Painting and met other artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Tobey and Mark Rothko, who together developed new theories of Abstract Expressionism and advanced painting. In 1948 she began to produce her first abstract works. In 1951 she participated in the trend-setting group exhibition "Ninth Street Show", which made the Abstract Expressionists known to a wider public. She established her personal style, which combined figurative motifs with the abstractly expressive brushstroke.
Mixed media on cream coloured cardboard. Signed in graphite. Mounted on a backing and framed under glass. - Well preserved and colourful.
