At the end of Analytical Cubism in 1911, Braque brought back his first paper sculptures from a trip to Céret. Too fragile, they were all destroyed. Douglas
Cooper, a great historian of cubism and friend of Picasso, confirms this opinion: "Braque had preceded Picasso in the execution of the paper sculptures". They will be of great importance since they will direct Braque towards the famous glued papers and synthetic cubism.
These paper sculptures will divert Braque from the realisation of "solid" cubist sculptures. He will surely regret this, since at the end of his life he will ask his friend, Baron Heger de Löewenfeld, to help him execute Hermes' sculpture, following a gouache that he will make for this purpose.
Braque's only cubist sculpture. The gilded bronze version will be on display at the Palais du Louvre in 1963, during Braque's lifetime.
