PRECIOUS RELIQUE STENDHALIENNE The work bears the autograph mention of the hand of Stendhal ? 14 7.bre 1813, first time two times ? and the mention ? 17 7bre. 1813, anniversary of our ingresso in Moskova, I see her for the first time to ti. ?
This note alludes to an intimate exploit, which the collector Francois Michel explains in a letter inserted in the volume: ? The date, inscribed twice, and which the reminder of the anniversary (the entry to Moscow) makes indisputable, obliges us to interpret the words "I see her for the first time" as meaning "I see her for the first time, [this year] en tete a tete", or more clearly: "Je la b.... pour la 1e fois cette annee"!... We know, in fact, that he had returned from
Russia in a state of semi-impotence and his 'nervous fever' in Silesia, from which he had just precisely recovered in Italy, had not had to restore his virility. He noted his weakness when he arrived at
Milan on September 7th? (Francois Michel).
Other origins: Adolphe de Boissy (?), stamp barely legible on the title) - note written in Italian by an unidentified author stuck to the back cover - Francois Michel (letter) - Simone Andre
Maurois (ex-libris).
