REVOLUTION OF 1848. - Very rare suite of 4 coloured lithographs illustrating the life and death of the Archbishop of Paris on the barricades during the revolution in Paris, New York, Goupil, Vibert; London, E. Gambart n.d. In oblong folio, grey cover, spine reinforced with black cloth.
Collection of 4 large lithographs (485 x 640 mm), the subjects (290 x 420 mm), published with the approval of the Vicars General, Capitulars, Administrators of the Diocese of Paris.
Denis-Auguste Affre (1793-1848), canon of Luçon, Amiens and then Paris, appointed Archbishop of Paris in 1840, had tried to bring an end to hostilities and restore peace by presenting himself among the combatants. He fell under fire at the barricade of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine.
