Although there are hundreds of Dan masks, statues have always been rarer.
The most famous of the Dan sculptors is Sra (Zlan) who was active between the two wars. Many students were active in the years
Unlike most ethnic groups, Dan statues are commissioned objects to honour the beauty of a notable woman.
The bodies of these statues are always balanced, a very straight head on a broad cylindrical neck resting on square shoulders bearing generous breasts and on either side two arms clear of the body, with strong legs and feet marking the anchoring of the object to the ground. This sculpture is enriched by a double-shelled headdress and multiple scarification marks on the neck, chest and abdomen. The brown wood is covered in several places with a beautiful crusty black patina that has probably been rubbed or waxed.
