REISCH, Gregor (circa 1470-1525). Margarita philosophica, totius philosophiae rationalis et moralis principia duodecim libris dialoguce complectens. Basel: Michael Furter, 1517. The first printed encyclopedia, the work of Gregor Reisch, a relative of Erasmus, prior at the Carthusian monastery of Freiburg and confessor to Emperor Maximilian. Constructed in a dialectical form between a master and a pupil, it is a rich compilation of medieval knowledge and where yet humanism is in its infancy. The immense success of the work, republished on numerous occasions throughout the 16th century, is also due to its very rich illustration, explanatory or allegorical, which varies from one edition to another. Brunet, IV, col. 1200-1201 (for the first edition). In-8 (193 x 140 mm). Title printed in red and black, with woodcut frame. Richly illustrated with woodcuts, full page or in text, diagrams and lettering. Antique marbled basane binding, spine ribbed, boxes decorated with fleurons (restored binding, leaves trimmed slightly too short, wet and freckled, restorations to the first two notebooks and the last two leaves). Provenance: handwritten ex-libris on the title page "De Don Francesco de Santiago Palomares". It is probably Francisco Javier de Santiago Palomares (1728-1796), Spanish calligrapher, writer, archivist and librarian. - (USD 1,402 - USD 2,103) To bid, please see the "Auction Information" section.
