RABELAIS, François (1494-1553). The Works of M. François Rabelais, Doctor of Medicine... Antwerp [Montluel]: François Nierg [Sébastien Jaquy and Claude Lescuyer for Charles Pesnot], 1573.
Extremely rare edition, "very elegantly printed" (Plan). Pierre Paul Plan, under number 105 of his Bibliographie rabelaisienne, is the first to describe this edition, and does so according to his personal copy. This edition "extremely rare and very well printed, reproduces line for line that of Pierre Estiart, 1571" (Tchemerzine, V, 311-112). The address is fictitious: it was actually printed in Montluel by Sébastien Jaquy and Claude Lescuyer for the Lyon bookseller Charles Pesnot (E. Droz, "Fausses adresses typographiques (suite)", Bibliothèque d'Humanisme et Renaissance 1961/3 (t. XXIII), pp. 572-591).
In-8 (118 x 74 mm). 5 engraved titles, plate from the bottle to the fifth book. Bound in 19th century blond calfskin, gilt rosette in the centre of the covers, gilt fillets in the frame and fleurons in the corners, spine ribbed and decorated boxes, red morocco coin, marbled endpapers, freckles). Provenance: Georges Massoulard (ex-libris).
