MARTIAL D'AUVERGNE, Martial de Paris, known as (1430-1508). LIII. Arrest d'Amours. Aresta Amorum... The whole diligently reviewed & corrected in an infinity of places besides the preceding impressions. Rouen: at Raphael du Petit Val, 1587. Rare edition of this famous satyric work, where, as the title suggests, a "Parliament of Love" makes various judgments, which are as many occasions to mock playful behavior. Thus, the fourth judgment is given to "a lady [who] complains about her amy, who had kissed her [kissed] so rudely, when she fell down, that one could hardly see the end of her shirt", the eighth, a "stop on the different of a cord, given by the Friend to the Lover, then lost, & found in the hands of another Lover, & sequestered", or the thirtieth, where "a friend complains that in order to serve his Lady he hanged everything, which since then has taken no account of her, concluding that she was condemned to maintain him as before". This edition, giving the Latin and French text, is in part original, since it is the first to bring the number of stops to 53. French Vernacular Books, II, No. 36959. Small in-8 (110 x 77 mm). Title-frontispiece (missing at the lower right corner of folio Nn1, with loss of some letters, and at the lower right corner of folio Rr2, without loss, some dirt and slight freckles). Old vellum a la Bradel, handwritten title on the spine. - (USD 351 - USD 467) To bid, please see the "Sales Information" section.
