Linz: Johann Planck for Gottfried Tambach and Frankfurt: Gottfried Tambach,1618, "1622" [1620] and 1621. Complete first edition of the seven books of Kepler. Following the publication of his Astronomia nova (1609), Kepler began writing works based on the principles and theories of Copernicus, which appeared successively in three thick octavo volumes. However, while the title seems to suggest a simple commentary, the work is above all an opportunity to present his own discoveries. The first part was logically included in the Index librorum prohibitorum by the Catholic Church, which had also accused Kepler's own mother of witchcraft. Brunet, III, col. 652 Caspar 55, 69 and 66 Houzeau and Lancaster, no. 11831 PMM, no. 112 (about Kepler). 3 parts in 1 vol. in-8 (158 x 95 mm), continuous pagination. One folding plate p. 820, many woodcut diagrams in the text. Bound in brown calfskin, Du Seuil decoration with in the centre of the covers the number C I in a vegetal medallion, spine ribbed and decorated boxes, marbled paper covers, gilt edges (slight lack in the outer margin of fol. 3E7, causing the loss of some letters, freckles, as always, especially in t. III, small lack in fol. l3v hinges and spine worn, head cover missing, some stains on the top cover). Provenance: binding with the number "C I" confined by fermesses -- handwritten ex-libris cancelled on the title page, the ink having spread to the next 2 ff. -- other old ex-libris illegible due to a small lack of paper, repaired by a piece glued on the back -- P. Brauman (stamp) -- by descent to the present owner. - (USD 4,673 - USD 7,010) To bid, please see the "Sales Information" section.
