GUYSE, Jacques de (c. 1340 - 1399). The First (Second/Third) Volume of the Illustrations of Gaul Belgium, antiquitez of the Countries of Haynnau and of the gra(n)d city of the Belgians has now dictated Bavay from which proceed the pavements of Brunehault. And of several princes who reigned & founded several cities and cite the country and other singular things worthy of memories that happened during their reigns until the Duke Philippe de Bourgongne last deceased. The aultres volumes will come out of brief to light... Paris: Jacques Regnault, Galliot du Pré, 1531-1532. Yemeniz copy, very fresh and with a large margin. Abstract, in French, of the translation attributed to Jean Lessabée of this chronicle of Hainaut by Jacques de Guise, a contemporary of Froissart. The identity of the translator is still subject to debate. The first complete and annotated translation did not appear until the 19th century. Brunet II, 1836. 3 volumes in 1 vol. in-folio (327 x 210 mm). 3 titles with an engraved architectural frame, printed in black and red for the first 2 volumes, a large full-page woodcut, repeated, showing the author presenting his work to the sovereign, a woodcut in the text representing the author at his desk and a large full-page woodcut showing the author writing at the court of his sovereign, engraved motto of Regnault at the end of the first volume, and that of Galliot du Pré at the end of the third volume. 19th century binding: brown calf, triple gilt fillet in the frames of the plates, spine ribbed, decorated boxes (fragile hinges).
