GREGORY IX (1170-1241). Decretalium copiosum argumentum. Divisiones glosarum ex Johanis andree novella diligenter deprompte: hic diligenter annotantur. Lyon: François Fradin, January 26, 1515. Lyon edition of the "decrees" of Gregory IX, given by François Fradin. The papal decrees were the subject of numerous compilations. This one, commissioned by Gregory IX from the Dominican Raymond de Peñafort, is the first canonical codification to be officially promulgated, in 1234. The Corpus Juris Canonici thus formed will remain the basis of canon law until the Code of 1917 was drawn up. The text of the law is framed by its commentary (gloss). The first leaf is decorated with a very beautiful initial painted and enhanced with embossed gold leaf and a very beautiful garland painted in the lower margin. Brunet, II, 1731. Large folio (424 x 295 mm). 10 ff. unencrypted with title with Fradin's mark and an engraved woodcut at mid-page representing Pope Gregory XI, 423 folios including two large woodcuts (family trees) on folios 325v and 326r, 4 unencrypted table ff., 17 unencrypted ff. for "Margarita Decretalium", and unencrypted folios for the directory of names and the life of Gregory IX. Some marginal annotations of the period. Binding of the period: cold-stamped sowskin, spine ribbed, brass pieces at the corners and cuts, original brass clasps, title in ink on the edge (first and last leaves slightly crumpled, worm galleries, second cover slightly rubbed).
