ALBINUS, Bernard Siegfried (1697-1770). Tables of the Skeleton and Muscles of the Human Body. London: John and Paul Knapton, 1749 - A Compleat System of the Blood-Vessels and Nerves. London: John and Paul Knapton, 1750. First English editions, published two years after the Latin edition given by Verbeek in Leiden. "The splendid series of 40 large copperplates (...) were drawn and engraved by Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759). They established a new standard in anatomical illustration, and remain unsurpassed for their artistic beauty and scientific accuracy" (Garrison-Morton). For the English edition, the plates were re-engraved by Ravenet while retaining their artistic quality. The Tables are followed by the Compleat System of the Blood-Vessels and Nerves, the same and illustrated with 11 plates engraved by Muller. The rhinoceros in the background on two magnificent plates is the first representation of the animal from a live model, which arrived at the Amsterdam Zoo in 1741. A wide-margined copy.
