LOMBARD STONE (circa 1096-1160). The Sentences, in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum [France, probably Provence, second half of the 13th century]. Beautiful manuscript fragment of one of the most important books of the Middle Ages: the Sentences of the scholastic theologian Pierre Lombard. It was used in medieval universities as a basic theological textbook from the 1220s until the 16th century. 230 x 160 mm. 41 leaves, 31 lines with two columns, 13th century cursive glosses, rubrics in red, alternating red and blue letters of the running titles, 3 large and several small filigree initials of 2 and 4 lines high alternately red and blue with extensions and scrolls in the other colour (several spots, more extensive on the first and last leaves, upper margins of some leaves very slightly cut).
