The forty sayings of the Prophet signed Haji Mahmud, Safavid Iran, dated 996AH/1587-88 AD, Persian manuscript on coloured paper, nine folios plus two fly-leaves, each folio arranged with seven panels of text, written in very fine black, silver, blue and red nasta'liq script, in various sizes, some text written diagonally, each cartouche within double black rules, text within blue, black, gold and green rules, each folio with vasali coloured borders, opening folio with gold and polychrome illuminated headpiece, signed and dated on final folio, later added notes to beginning, some later additions crudely applied throughout, in red binding with gilt decoration, two Indian seal impressions, text panel 12.9 x 13cm.; folio 21.8 x 13.2cm.
