Born in Mueda, Mozambique, in 1939, John Fundi created most of his work in Tanzania, working in the "shetani style" of the Makonde tradition. This traditional sculpture, associated with ancestor worship, gradually freed itself from its religious origins in the second half of the 20th century, allowing local artists to develop a more personal and creative style. John Fundi was exhibited during the Magicians of the Earth at the Pompidou Centre in 1989.
