LARGE FOSSIL SEA LILY ASSEMBLAGE
Seirocrinus subangularis
Lower Jurassic period
Posidonienschiefer Formation
Toarcium, Lias epsilon2, Holzmaden, Germany
This exceptionally well-preserved group of four complete Sea Lilies epitomizes the natural beauty of fossils. Each specimen display fully opened crowns with outstretched feathery arms and long curvaceous stems. The delicate details on these specimens can easily be seen due to the careful preparation and calcified preservation.
Sea Lilies, also known as Crinoids are actually exotic looking animals, not plants, though they appear more like plants having evolved a plant-like morphology. Also known as feather-stars, crinoids are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. These ancient creatures would sway through the oceans spreading their feathery arms to capture plankton from the sea water.
These uncommonly large specimens have been skillfully rearranged onto a natural Holzmaden shale matrix from the “Fleins” layer, which is slightly above the fossil layers. The crown (head) of the largest specimen in this grouping measures an impressive 27 ½ inches (70 cm.) across. The long curvaceous stems are attached to a section of driftwood which has also fossilized and is coated with various pyritized sea shells.
This truly rare and unique, natural Objet d'art over 195 million years old, can easily be hung on a wall as it has been backed with a steel frame and hanging molds. It measures 7 ½ x 4 ¾ feet (230 x 144 cm.).
