Ichthyosaurs are important in evolutionary biology. Their fossils help to demonstrate the adaptation of vertebrates from aquatic origins to terrestrial life. Of all known reptiles, ichthyosaurs were the most completely adapted to their environment, their ecological niche could be compared to that of the dolphin today.
