Spoon Mangbetu
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood
L.: 27 cm.
Stylized spoon whose handle is an anthropomorphic figure connected to the spoon, presenting a characteristic high braided hairstyle and rejected backwards, ending with a high fan-shaped bun. The whole body is structured by a network of geometric motifs.
Among the Mangbetu, from childhood, children were subjected to compression and elongation of the skull, which was held tightly together by raffia ties. This is the ideal cannon of the aristocracy.
A replacement object, when the original was sold, harvested, stolen or destroyed, often made by the same sculptor as the original, this object was used.
