HALFIGUR
mixed technique with acrylic on canvas.
90 x 70 cm.
Signed "Appel" and dated "79" at lower left. Study begun on canvas on verso.
In a narrow frame.
Portrait in front of a green background with plastically carved green eyes, nose and mouth, holding the right hand upwards while the left hand holds a small round object between the fingers in the lower foreground. Typical of the artist's oeuvre, works created from 1950 onwards, in which he cited figures as a central motif, which he interpreted in the sense of a new kind of naive "Art brut". The painting consists of colour-intensive, sometimes large areas and strong, pasty lines.
Along with Asger Jorn (1914-1973), Constant (1920-2005), Corneille (1922-2010) and others, the artist is one of the founders of the "CoBrA" group of artists, which was dedicated to reinterpreting Expressionism in painting in the sense of a new artistic position and combining it with the means of the emerging Informel.
