IMAGE OF A HOLLAND GIRL
Oil on wood
. 41 x 26.5 cm.
Signed lower right.
In gilded splendid frame.
In front of a green meadow, which shows houses on the horizon, under a high grey sky, the portrait of a young girl to the left in darker clothes and a shawl. She has blonde hair and wears a white Dutch cap on it. With her fine face, small red mouth, reddened cheeks and brown eyes she looks out of the painting to the side. Typical motif for the famous Dutch painter.
Note:
The artist is one of the most important representatives of the Hague School. After his time in Amsterdam and then Paris, where he met the painters of Barbizon, he went to The Hague; here it was his paintings by ordinary people, especially fishermen from South Holland, that made him famous.
