Isaac Lazarus Israel, 1865 Amsterdam - 1934 The Hague PORTRAIT OF A MAN WITH ROUND NICKEL BRILL OIL on canvas. Doubled. 50.5 x 40.5 cm. Signed "Isaac Israels" at lower right. In gilded frame. In front of brown background the portrait of the man with brown jacket and white shirt. He has brown hair, slightly pinched red lips and with his dark eyes he looks seriously out of the picture at the viewer. The finely nuanced, almost monochrome colour palette and the sure, sometimes broad brushstroke betray the artist's involvement with Impressionism. A typical work for the well-known artist. The painter was the son of the early impressionist Jozef Israels (1824-1911). He first attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague before enrolling at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. During the summer he often spent time in Scheveningen on the Dutch coast, where he worked with the older German impressionist Max Liebermann (1847-1935). He was a friend of Georg Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923), especially during his working hours in Paris and London. In 1928 he received the gold medal for his painting "Rider in Red Skirt".
