Jean-Pierre Cassigneul, born 1935 Paris LE BERET JAUNEÖl on canvas. 91,5 x 64,8 cm. Signed lower right, at the back side again with the title "le beret Jaune" and dated "Paris 1970". The present painting breathes the summer atmosphere of a Mediterranean mood, with a sandy beach, a sailing ship in the background and the young girl with a yellow beret holding her hands on a white beam. The eyes are large and slightly shaded, showing youthful melancholy, the mouth with beautifully formed lips seductive innocence. The painting is one of the artist's best works. The painter, who was active in France, became known especially for his portraits of women, in which he was able to create the lightness of summer moods, often young girls with straw hats, mostly in Mediterranean surroundings. His style continues the former avant-garde of Nabi artists, with reminiscences of painters such as Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940), or Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), sometimes his paintings show the proximity of Kees van Dongen (1877-1968). The painter held his first private exhibition at the age of 17 at the Lucy Krohg Gallery in Paris. Two years later he attended the Academie Charpentier and studied there under Jean Souverbie (1891-1981), professor at the École des Beaux-Artes in Paris. In 1958 he held his first exhibition and subsequently became a member of the Salon d'Automne. In addition to further training by Roger Chapelain-Midy (1904-1992), he participated in several exhibitions in Paris and other French cities and was subsequently under contract to the Belle Choses Gallery in Paris. From 1965 he exhibited internationally, for example at the Tamenaga Gallery in Japan or the Wally Findlay Gallery in New York. In recent years he has been represented by the Smith Davidson Gallery, and since 2015-2017 he has been featured in several international presentations. A.R.
