Margaretha Roosenboom, 1843 The Hague - 1896 Voorburg still life with white rose oil on canvas. 65,8 x 39 cm. Signed "Margt Roosenboom" at lower right. In front of a brown background, standing on a rectangular stone, a light brown vase, in it the fine arrangement with white roses. These are reproduced in different stages: Partly fully bloomed, partly with buds and a downward hanging, already withered rose, amidst green leaves, some of which have fallen down onto the plate. Fine harmonious painting in restrained colouring with skilful chiaroscuro accentuation. The artist received her first lessons from her father and her maternal grandfather Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870), who also taught her the watercolour technique. She preferred to paint flowers in their mostly natural state, arranged in vases or on a stone plinth. The type of flower she most often depicted was roses.
