Limestone relief of the Iti Height: 67 cm. Width: 35 cm. Egyptian, Old Empire, 5th-6th Dynasty, 2498-2181 BC Large limestone fragment showing a dignitary in stepping position to the left. He wears a short wig with curls set closely in rows and a kilt with almost vertical pleats. Above the figure, who holds a sceptre vertically on the left and a club horizontally on the right, is a multi-line inscription. In it the Wab priest Iti is mentioned, "the overseer of the magistrate, the blessed Iti". The relief, of which at least one parallel is known in the art trade, once served as a gatepost. It shows Iti walking forward by day, reborn after his death. According to the latest findings, this relief comes from a grave in Giza with the number D221, which was excavated between 1903 and 1907 by the German Egyptologist Georg Steindorff. Compare the mention in: Bertha Porter, Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs, and Paintings, III Memphis, Oxford 1974, p. 117. Furthermore, the stela is published in: Grusenmeyer-Woliner, A World of Sculpture IV, p. 124. Surface cleaned and stabilized in a few places, minor bumps. Provenance: English private collection before 1989. Then Belgian private collection Karim Grusenmeyer. Exhibitions: January 2016 at the BRAFA in Brussels and in March 2017 at the TEFAF in Maastricht.
