Hans Rottenhammer the Elder (1564/5 - 1625) and Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 - 1625) PREPARATION FOR THE WEDDING OF AMPHITRITE AND POSEIDON Oil on canvas 147 x 180 cm. An expert opinion by Dr. Klaus Ertz dated July 20, 2013 is available. In his concluding sentence he admires the consistency with which the complicated pictorial theme of two different artists, who were also of different nationalities, could be combined. In his conclusion, he comes to the conclusion that the attribution "handwritten work by Hans Rottenhammer (figures) and Jan Brueghel the Elder. (landscape) created around 1595 in Italy". Poseidon was in love with the beautiful Amphitrite, but she was afraid and used the depths of the ocean as a cover. Finally it was a dolphin sent by Poseidon who tracked down Amphitrite and won her for the god. The present painting shows the moving moment when Amphitrite returns to accept Poseidon's proposal. Like most of the paintings, which were created in collaboration between the two artists mentioned above, this painting was probably made around 1595. Ertz emphasizes the great skill of Brueghel, which he considered to be limited, the task came to female nudes. Here he liked to get help from well-known artists, who mastered this task gladly and with bravura; the probably best known and most popular was Hans Rottenhammer. Provenance: Verber Collection, Sevilla, there for about 80-100 years. Note: The present painting shows stylistic affinity with the following works: Andromeda and Perseus, Vienna, Galerie Sankt Lucas, 2008 (Ertz/ Nitze-Ertz, 2008-10, Vol. II, Cat. 336 with colour plate, photocopy 1). Circe and Ulysses. Toronto, Art Gallery of Ontario (Ertz/ Nitze-Ertz 2008 - 2010, vol. I, cat. 347 with fig. The Judgement of the Midas. Cambridge, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Inv. No. PD 23-1981 (Ertz/ Nitze-Ertz 2008 - 2010, Vol. II, Cat. 375 with ills.)
