Ottmar Elliger the Elder,
1633 - 1679
FRUIT GARLAND ON NISH WITH ROMANS AND LEMON
Oil on canvas Doubled.
68 x 77.5 cm. In vegetable carved and gilded frame.
The attribution was made in 1998 by Fred Meijer, the painting is registered at the RKD in The Hague under no. 64338.
After a short stay in Frankfurt and Copenhagen, where he worked at the court of Frederick III, he married in Amsterdam in 1660, moved to Hamburg in 1665 and finally to Berlin in 1669, where he became court painter to Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg. Many of his flower and fruit garlands show the influence of Daniel Seghers. However, instead of a cartouche made of chiseled stone, Elliger imagined a rectangular wooden niche in our picture, which illusionistically depicts the windowsill of a simple house.
